Course Description

This is a self-paced course to explore the foundations of addiction, examining how substances and behaviors affect the brain’s structure and function. Through an interdisciplinary lens, students will gain a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that drive addictive behavior, the role of genetics and environment, and how addiction disrupts decision-making, motivation, and reward systems. Overall, this course is designed for those in career fields related to prevention providing a foundation for understanding the relationship between addiction and the brain.

Objectives

Across six modules, you will learn to:

    1. Explain the Neurobiological Basis of Addiction.

    2. Differentiate Between Types and Mechanisms of Addictive Substances.

    3. Integrate Psychological and Social Dimensions with Neurobiological Models.

    4. Assess Current Research and Practices.

    5. Apply Knowledge to Real-World Scenarios.

Course Length

The entire course will take about 4.5 hours to complete in one sitting; however, you have the ability to save your progress and return at any time.

Course Materials

All students will receive access to key terms used throughout the course, accessible activity companion guides, and a generalized course resource guide. Students will have access to materials upon completion of the respective sections and can be re-accessed at any time after completion. 

After all modules are complete and the survey is submitted, the downloadable Certificate of Completion will be unlocked.
