The science of reading is an interdisciplinary body of research on reading development, assessment, and instruction. This knowledge is essential for teachers to deliver effective reading instruction that fosters the literacy skills necessary for success in school and beyond. 

The purpose of the Studying the Science of Reading: Practice Assessment is twofold: 

  1. To provide pre-service and in-service teachers practice applying critical concepts from the science of reading 

  1. To provide information on pre-service and in-service teachers’ strengths and areas of need related to their knowledge of the science of reading  

Each module is aligned to an area of reading development, instruction, or assessment: 

  • Emergent Literacy and Language 

  • Beginning Reading and Spelling 

  • Word Analysis 

  • Reading Fluency 

  • Vocabulary 

  • Reading Comprehension: Literary Text 

  • Reading Comprehension: Informational Text 

  • Reading Assessment 

  • Best Practices for Reading Instruction 

Each module contains an 8-question multiple-choice quiz related to the module topic. After completing the quiz, users will be able to view their responses and scores. In addition, the correct response to each question will be displayed, along with feedback and an explanation of the correct response. Users can use this feedback to build their understanding of evidence-based reading development, assessment, and instruction and identify strengths and areas for additional knowledge building. A downloadable certificate of completion is available for the entire practice assessment and each quiz.
